Norgrove Railway

Three engines, countless opportunities in California at Norgrove Garden Vineyards.

Part of our 2025 California Steam Charter

Hosted in collaboration between Dak Dillon Photography and SLORailfanning

With nearly three miles of track nestled inside the Norgrove Gardens Vineyard, this 2 foot gauge railroad may be relatively unknown – but it includes countless opportunities available for the first time to photographers.

For our special photo event, all three engines will be hot and running with scenes around the property. This is the first time Norgrove has held a photo event and one of the first times it has been open to an outside group. Extra crew will be on hand to make the event possible thanks to a large British contingent.

For our event, the trains will pull a mix of gondolas, rider cars and potentially freight flat cars used for MOW.

The Norgrove Railway, located at Norgrove Gardens Vineyard, is home to an exceptional collection of historic narrow gauge steam locomotives, each with its unique story and place in railway history. Highlights include:

Norgrove Gardens Railway No. 6 “Buckeye”
Built in 1935 by Orenstein & Koppel in Berlin, the “Buckeye” is a two-foot gauge 0-4-0T steam locomotive originally used for mining and forestry operations in Africa, alongside its sister engine, “Popeye.” After its industrial service, it operated as a children’s ride and a tourist train in Zimbabwe before being purchased and fully restored by Peter Nott in California.

United States Army No. 5240
Constructed in 1918 by Davenport Locomotive Works, this 2-6-2T steam locomotive was designed for World War I trench railways but remained stateside due to the Armistice. It served on U.S. military camp railways before being sold off, and is one of only three surviving examples of its type. Fully restored in 2021, it runs on the Norgrove Gardens Railway as the only operational Davenport 2-6-2T.

Norgrove Railway No. 8
Built in 1938 by Orenstein & Koppel, this compact 0-4-0T locomotive highlights the German manufacturer’s legacy in producing reliable industrial steam engines. No. 8 complements the collection’s focus on small, historically significant locomotives.

The Norgrove property includes numerous photo opportunities, including a small depot, tunnel, trestle and rolling hills. A night photo session is included with the charter ticket.

Photo charters offer a distinctive experience compared to traditional photo workshops. While workshops are typically hands-on and intimate, photo charters provide a unique group adventure.

Participants ride a train to carefully selected locations, disembark, and then photograph the train as it performs staged runbys against stunning natural backdrops.

The train is expertly positioned to take advantage of the best lighting conditions, often including golden hour lighting.

Each location offers multiple opportunities to photograph the train from different angles as it backs up and proceeds forward, simulating genuine railroad operations. This immersive experience allows photographers to create a diverse portfolio of images that showcase the romance and nostalgia of steam railroading, all while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts.

During the event, the property is also closed to the public to limit potential obstacles.

Norgrove Railway is located in Arroyo Grande, near Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo.

The nearest airport with regular service is Bakersfield. Los Angeles is about 3:30 hours drive, with Fresno about 2:40 away.

For the California events, a hotel around San Luis Obispo would make sense as it’s located between the two railroads.
