Over two days in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, the Midwest Central Railroad will host freight and passenger operations featuring Baldwin 2-6-0 No. 6 and West Side Lumber Shay No. 9. With the reunion grounds quiet between annual events, the charter will offer a variety of photographic angles and scenes across the property not typically available during the busy reunion season.
Freight consists will draw from the railroad’s distinctive collection of Rio Grande rolling stock, including boxcars, flat cars and drop-bottom gondolas, along with a fully restored East Broad Top hopper. Maybe some logs will even make an appearance with the Shay.
Passenger operations will utilize the railroad’s fleet of yellow coaches and a historic combine, allowing for a variety of visual combinations and period-inspired scenes across the property.
With the reunion grounds largely empty for the event, photographers will have access to angles and compositions rarely possible during normal operations — from broad views across the grounds to tightly framed scenes emphasizing the railroad’s narrow gauge character and historic equipment.
To maintain safe operations and allow for flexible photographic setups, participation will be limited.
Extend your weekend in Mount Pleasant with an optional Friday evening session featuring historic streetcars and interurban equipment from the Midwest Electric Railway.
The event will feature posed scenes, runbys and night photography across the historic Midwest Old Threshers grounds. Learn More
The first day will operate from sunrise into the evening, taking advantage of late-September light across the Midwest Central Railroad’s grounds in Mount Pleasant.
With lower sun angles and long golden-hour periods typical of early fall in Iowa, the day will emphasize dramatic glint opportunities, warm evening light and a variety of changing photographic conditions.
Operations will feature both freight and passenger consists staged throughout the railroad’s one-mile loop.
Throughout the day, movements will be planned to maximize favorable light and varied compositions, with opportunities ranging from broad rural scenes to tighter narrow gauge perspectives around the railroad’s infrastructure and station areas.
The day will conclude with a night photo session focused around some of the railroad’s signature locations, including the historic depot, water tank and road crossing, utilizing sunset and early evening light for a different mix of scenes and atmosphere.
The second day will continue with a different mix of freight and passenger operations featuring No. 6 and No. 9, with photography running from early morning through late afternoon.
Some locations may be revisited to take advantage of alternate lighting conditions or different train consists, while additional scenes will focus on the railroad’s stations, yard areas and narrow gauge infrastructure.
The quieter setting of the grounds during this period will allow for clean compositions and broader views that are often difficult during the annual reunion event.
Operations throughout the day will also incorporate the railroad’s semaphore signal installation, offering additional opportunities to capture classic narrow gauge scenes featuring period-style signaling, freight operations and passenger movements.
Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1891, No. 6 is the oldest operating locomotive on the Midwest Central Railroad. The 2-6-0 Mogul spent its early life working in Virginia before later operating in South Carolina lumber service and eventually arriving in Iowa in 1960.
No. 9, a three-truck Shay built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1923, originally operated for California’s West Side Lumber Company, one of the last steam-powered narrow gauge logging railroads in the United States. The 80-ton geared locomotive has become one of the signature pieces of the Midwest Central Railroad collection since arriving in Mount Pleasant in 1966.
